[Johannesburg, 27 February 2019]: With a wide range of products and services under one roof, Shumani Industrial Equipment redefines the one-stop shop model when it comes to the provision of industrial equipment.

In recent years, the industrial equipment industry has not only seen a hastening trend towards consolidation within the supplier community, but also an expansion of the range of products and services offered under one roof. This has created true “one-stop shops” that are able to service a wide range of customers’ needs from one stable.

Victor Nemukula, Director at Shumani Industrial Equipment, a level 2 B-BBEE company that represents leading international equipment brands in the industrial sector, reasons that convenience is one of the many reasons why today’s equipment buyers prefer to purchase goods and services from a one-stop-shop.

“Instead of having to go to multiple businesses, they can just go to one location for all of their needs. Apart from convenience, dealing with a single supplier for a whole range of equipment needs means faster turnaround times for increased uptime,” says Nemukula.

Shumani’s business model sets a new one-stop shop era with its holistic range of industrial equipment products and services. The only 51% black-owned and managed business in this market, Shumani is the only supplier that, from under one roof, can offer forklifts and material handling equipment; cleaning equipment; access equipment; compact construction equipment; engines, generators and agricultural equipment; as well as compressed air solutions.

“This has allowed us to serve several sectors, including mining, construction, industrial, warehousing and manufacturing, among others,” says Nemukula. “As a one-stop shop for a wide range of industrial equipment needs, we can bundle a broad range of services and limit the amount of interfaces necessary for our customers. This approach eliminates the need for end users to manage a number of different suppliers with different points of contact and different quality management systems.”

The holistic equipment range is complemented by an unparalleled aftersales service regime. The company employs a total of 30 technicians to look after its customers’ machines. This is complemented by 16 admin staff working across several of its branches in all the major industrial hubs, including Durban, Upington, Port Elizabeth, East London, Johannesburg, Polokwane, Bloemfontein and Cape Town.

In the three years of its existence, Shumani has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the South African industrial equipment space. Testimony to this a long list of some major blue chip clients, including Coca Cola South Africa, AB In-Bev, Bell Equipment, Maxion Wheels, EnviroServ, Imperial, Transnet, Mechanical Assembly Product South Africa, Famous Brands, Bevcan, Multotec, American Embassy, Mpact Operations and GRE Investment, among others.

Leading brands

Shumani represents leading international brands across various sectors. Through its distributorship agreement with Goscor, the company distributes Crown, Doosan, Bendi, Hubtex and Taylor Dunn (forklifts and materials handling equipment); Bobcat (compact & construction); Tennant, Elgin, Maer, Delfin, Kaivac and HighPoint (industrial cleaning equipment); HPower, Weima, Meiwa and Rato (industrial power solutions); Genie (aerial lift equipment); Sullair and Ozen (compressed air solutions), among many others.

Shumani is also a distributor of Kalmar Equipment, a leading global provider of cargo handling solutions and services to ports, terminals, distribution centres and heavy industries.

“These brands are complementary by their very nature. For example, in a typical warehousing environment, your typical tools of trade are the different types of lift trucks, which we offer from one stable, but there is also need for various types of cleaning equipment, which we also offer in-house. On a construction site, we can also supply anything from an excavator, through to a 58 m access platform for working at height,” explains Nemukula.

Extended scope of services

Apart from the extensive product range, Shumani also offers a comprehensive scope of services, all the way from outright purchases and short and long-term rentals (Bobcat equipment & forklifts), to full maintenance leases and full technical support.

“Our business model is informed by the understanding that in today’s operating conditions, suppliers of equipment must be able to offer different solutions to suit different needs of varying customer groups,” says Nemukula. “For example, the dilemma of buying versus renting often arises when equipment needs are in question. There are pros and cons to each, and there is no right or wrong in these options, but a one-stop-shop supplier can be able to not only advise what suits the customer, but to offer the right solution.”

Nemukula is of the view that often rental is a perfect fit for short-term jobs when companies want to meet unplanned or infrequent equipment needs. “If companies need a piece of equipment regularly enough over its estimated useful life, the case to purchase it outright is probably strong.”

Shumani has seen a growing need for its rental services over the four years it has been operational. Nemukula says companies understand that they need to focus on their core businesses, rather than having capital equipment assets sitting on their balance sheets. “As a result, we have seen a growing trend towards renting of equipment, rather than buying, more so for blue-chip companies. About 90% of our business at this stage is rental, mostly on a long-term basis,” concludes Nemukula.

[Johannesburg, 12 February 2019]: To further reinforce its market-leading position in the industrial equipment business, Shumani has appointed Shaun Morton as Operations Director.  Morton, who has been in the industry since 1996, brings with him a wealth of experience in order  to help steer the Shumani business to greater heights.

A strong management team, that understands the business, is as important as the product or service a company offers.  With that in mind, leading industrial equipment supplier, Shumani, has appointed Shaun Morton, who possesses many years of experience in the industry, as its Operations Director.

In his new role, which became effective on the 01st November 2018, Morton, who is working closely with Managing Director, Victor Nemukula, has been tasked to further accelerate the only 51% black-owned industrial equipment supplier’s business growth.

“My role entails managing the operations of the business, working closely with the Managing Director in setting and accomplishing goals that promote company growth.  I will also oversee the sales functions of the business nationally,” says Morton, adding that his major and immediate task is to put strategies in place to grow the bottom line.

He is also in quest of increased efficiency within the sales functions of the business.  “We seek to grow both the sales team’s complement and their sales numbers.  We currently have a team of three external sales people, a Sales Manager and a National Key Accounts Manager. I  will work closely with them in order to achieve our objective to further grow our sales,” says Morton.

Morton joins Shumani from Goscor Lift Truck Company (GLTC), where he was the National Rental Director at the time of his departure.  Morton, who holds a National Diploma in Production Business Management, has been in the forklift business since 1996.  He was introduced to the industry by his father, who, when he joined the family business operated a fleet of eighteen rental forklifts.

Way back in 2010 Morton joined the Goscor family following the merger of his previous company, MPM Forklifts with GLTC.  Morton started off as the General Manager. Backed by his proven expertise in the materials handling equipment industry, Morton went on to set GLTC’s Rental/Used division on a sustainable growth path.

Morton says some of the winning formulas he will take with him from Goscor Rental Company to Shumani, include team work and efficiency.  “By working together as a team, we can achieve more, and it is important to find solutions that work best for the growth of the business.  Efficiency is a quality that I believe will take us further forward.  It is about removing obstacles to productivity, deploying talent strategically and building a culture of accountability,” says Morton.

Morton joins Shumani at a time in which the business has seen exciting growth during the past three years. In these three years of its existence, Shumani has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the South African industrial equipment space.  Testimony to this a long list of some major blue-chip clients which includes Coca-Cola South Africa, AB In-Bev, Bell Equipment, Maxion Wheels, EnviroServ, Imperial, Transnet, Mechanical Assembly Products South Africa, Famous Brands, Bevcan, Multotec, American Embassy, Mpact Operations and GRE Investment amongst others.

“In the past three years, Shumani has achieved genuine customer success stories and this has had an incredible brand building effect for the company, allowing it to cut through competition and validating its offering in the marketplace,” says Morton.

Shumani currently boasts a large installed base of approximately 1 500 machines in service across South Africa.  A key point to note is that it has a 98% proven track record of uptime on this large fleet.  This has been made possible by an unparalleled after-sales service regime.

The company employs a total of 21 technicians to look after the machines.  This is complemented by 16 administrative staff, working across several of its branches, in all the major industrial hubs including Durban, Upington, Port Elizabeth, East London, Johannesburg, Polokwane, Bloemfontein and Cape Town.

[Johannesburg, 28 November 2018]: To execute its stormwater drains and sewer line cleaning contract awarded by the City of Tshwane, Mdndibi Business Enterprise has taken delivery of a new HPVR-500 vacuum truck from leading industrial equipment supplier, Shumani Industrial Equipment.

Mdndibi Business Enterprise is a black woman-owned business founded by Dimakatso Maluleke back in 2004. It initially has its roots in catering and then construction, before it found a niche in industrial cleaning and waste collection.

As proof that the business has done the hard yards in the waste industry, Mdndibi Business Enterprise was recently awarded a 36-year contract by the City of Tshwane to clean stormwater drains and sewer lines in the Soshanguve area.

Owner Dimakatso Maluleke explains that she quickly went into the market for a fitting piece of equipment to execute the job. She eventually opted for the HPVR-500 vacuum truck supplied by Shumani Industrial Equipment on the 19th of October 2018.

According to Maluleke, one of the key considerations that informed the buying decision is the compact nature of the HPVR-500, given the space constraints in areas where it’s due to be deployed. “We found the HPVR-500 combination jetting and vacuum truck to be the perfect fit for this contract, largely due to the fact that it is small enough to work in the space-constrained rural areas,” she says, adding that the unit has performed beyond expectations thus far.

Victor Nemukula, Director at Shumani Industrial Equipment, explains that with compact dimensions, the base combined vacuum and jetting unit is the ideal gulley sucker to work in close quarters. Manufactured locally by Highpoint Vacuum, the HPVR-500 is a robust, no-frills mild steel unit for non-hazardous goods application. It features a 12,5 m³ tank, 2 500-litre service liquid tank for long continuous operation.

“The tank is made from 304L stainless steel which offers superior resistance against corrosion. The hydraulic suction boom and 120 m hydraulic jetting hose reel is standard with a variety of suction and hose options. The tri-lobe blower is compact and extremely silent, making it a perfect fit for working in residential areas,” explains Nemukula.

The HPVR-500’s tank tips hydraulically with a 14-t tipping cylinder, up to 50 degree tipping angle. The tank features a full opening rear door with hydraulic opening and adjustable hinges; the door fastens with four hydraulic operated clamps with mechanical locking to prevent accidental opening while driving. The door is secured in the opening position by a mechanical safety hook to prevent accidental closing during tank cleaning and maintenance procedures.

The tank is fitted with D100 PN16 ball valves at the back for suction and liquid discharge operations, fitted with perrot-type couplings, blanks with 12 mm drain valve and 90-degree elbow. It is also fitted with flared spillage chutes at the back to limit spillage during dumping. Two revolving strobe lights are fitted on the tank for night time visibility with a work light at the back for night time operation.

“The vacuum comes with a self-tensioning pulley system to protect the pump.  It also comes with a bolt-on drive guard for easy access and belt replacement. An inspection louver is on guard for inspection and ventilation,” concludes Nemukula.

[Johannesburg, 26 November 2018]: Shumani Industrial Equipment’s short-term forklift rental solution offers customers the flexibility they need to navigate current tough economic conditions.

Shumani Industrial Equipment’s short-term forklift rental solution offers flexible terms of up to 24 months, depending on customer requirements. According to Director Victor Nemukula, the service is a perfect fit for short-term jobs where companies want to meet unplanned or infrequent forklift needs. While it suits several industrial groups, Nemukula sees the short-term rental service as a great fit for the Food & Beverage industry at this stage.

“We believe that this is one of the most flexible forklift rental option available in the market. It is ideally suited to exact customer needs. Customers don’t have a long-term commitment to the piece of equipment they rent. In case of any unforeseen circumstances, they can terminate the rental agreement anytime even before the end of the agreed term,” explains Nemukula.

The expanded rental fleet from Shumani comprises machines from 1,8 tonnes upwards. It is a mix of all the leading brand names in the company’s stable, including Crown, Doosan, Bendi, Hubtex and Taylor Dunn. The rental service is available across South Africa, but mainly in major cities. Shumani has several branches in all the major industrial hubs, including Durban, Upington, Port Elizabeth, East London, Johannesburg, Polokwane, Bloemfontein and Cape Town.

The short-term forklift rental business is part of Shumani’s extensive service offering, informed by the company’s drive to meet varying customer needs. Shumani offers a comprehensive scope of services, all the way from outright purchases and short and long-term rentals, to full maintenance leases and technical support.

“Our business model is informed by the understanding that in today’s operating conditions, suppliers of equipment must be able to offer different solutions to suit different needs of varying customer groups,” says Nemukula.

The dilemma of buying versus renting often arises when forklift needs are in question. “In many circumstances, when it really is one thing you utilise each day, outright purchasing makes great financial sense. However, if you simply need a forklift only occasionally, like many warehouses, factories and various product handling businesses do, forklift rental makes more sense,” concludes Nemukula.

[Johannesburg, 10 October 2018]: Wastecon 2018 comes a time when cities and towns battle to keep roads, pavements and other hard surfaces clean and free from debris. To help municipalities get the better of litter struggles, Shumani will showcase its innovative MACRO M60 road sweeper at the show.

Shumani Industrial Equipment will be exhibiting at Wastecon 2018 (Stand No Stand E8), a premier showcase of best practice African waste management solutions, which will take place at Emperor’s Palace from 15-18 October.

Victor Nemukula, Director at Shumani, says this year’s event comes at a time when South African cities and municipalities continue to grapple with waste minimisation and landfill issues. Landfilling is the current and most common method of solid waste disposal in South Africa and the practice is not sustainable. Therefore, cities need to develop alternative waste management alternatives.

However, apart from landfilling, municipalities are battling with increased littering, which has become an environmental issue, not only in South Africa, but across many countries around the world. To get the better of the problem, municipalities are looking at innovative technologies, such as road sweepers to get the better of the littering conundrum. With that in mind, Shumani will be showcasing its MACRO M60 road sweeper at Wastecon.

“We have chosen to exhibit the MACRO M60 road sweeper at the show. The product is the right solution for keeping our city roads and streets clean at minimum costs,” explains Nemukula. “It speaks directly to metropolitan municipalities and big towns such as Nelspruit, Polokwane and Kimberly, among others, as well as authorities such as SANRAL.”

MACRO street sweepers are the most advanced and performing machines for continuous professional use currently available on the market. For years, MACRO technology has focused on four objectives: simple use, consumption reduction, low environmental impact and fast return on investment.

With the MACRO M60, large volumes of dry waste can be collected. Its 6 m³ hopper and 6 000 kg payload is the highest capacity on the market, allowing long working shifts. “The machine also offers exclusive capability to sweep in unbalanced conditions like sidewalks. The system allows to sweep on bumps with no operator’s action required,” explains Nemukula.

The MACRO M60 uses a mechanical suction system. The waste is collected by the mechanical action of the side and central brushes, as well as the vertical loading conveyor. The suction is only aimed at capturing the dust as soon as it’s raised up from the floor. The suction is optimised to allow the full suppression of dusts thanks to large surface filter.

“Other exciting features include the four-wheel steering which gives the M60 excellent manoeuvrability in all working conditions; a fully adjustable third front brush that allows to sweep 180° left and right side; and the ability to dump at any height between 1,1 and 2,3 m,” concludes Nemukula.
